This week, while being cut short with a late start and a snow day, was crammed with many fun things. The entire class has now given their speeches and I really enjoyed hearing the different theories on the formation of the Gorge. As a class we will revisit the geology we've learned and the theories we've heard, and attempt to create a thorough and detailed theory of how the Gorge was formed. As we review geology for the formation theory, we will also be studying up for our class Geology Bowl. This Geology Bowl will happen the first week of February and will cover all geology subjects of the year. Students will receive a study guide and a team, along with study time in class, beginning next week.
We started book groups this week. Students are in group of three or four based around an author. Each student in the group is reading a different book by the same author and will share about their book during meetings. At this point meetings are scheduled for twice a week, lasting about 15 minutes during silent reading time. Each student is expected to read at least one book, although it is likely many will read two or more books. Book groups will run for one month. The authors we are reading are: Richard Peck, Sharon Creech, Lloyd Alexander, Beverly Cleary, Andrew Clements, Walt Morey, Roald Dahl, and Avi.
Our Rube Goldberg inventions should be ready for viewing next week in the hallway of the Grade School. Our simple machines unit starts today with levers. Be sure to ask about levers when your student comes home.
Enjoy the long weekend! See you all on Tuesday.
